Marina Abramovic- Artist of the Week




I really love performance art. If I could be any artist I would be performance artist. I think it's such an interesting way to communicate a feeling in such a graphic and symbolic way. I think performance art almost works in a similar way to horror movies in making you feel a certain way but not truly explaining situations. Sorry I don't know what I am saying. Anyways... this piece really asks and raises the question: WAR: What is it good for and how does it affect the world's children?

That's the question performance artist Marina Abramovic dares to explore in her latest multimedia project.

Of most interest to me is the photography series titled The Family in which she "poses Laotian children — symbols of innocence — costumed as soldiers in various warlike scenarios, all against the backdrop of a region known for spirituality, but also conflict."

A preeminent performance artist with a commanding presence on the international art scene for over 30 years, Abramović is known for intense duration-based works that demand extraordinary physical, mental and emotional strength. The Belgrade-born artist has also produced an imposing array of sculptures, installations, photos and video pieces. As Abramović approaches 64, she and her work (in many respects one and the same thing) are as vital and visible as ever. She was one of the five women artists featured in Chiara Clemente’s recent documentary, Our City Dreams....
